Stephen Meder, Ph.D.


Stephen Meder holds a joint academic appoint at that University of Hawaii. He is on the faculty at the School of Architecture, where he performs research and teaches environmental design. In his other faculty post he serves as the Director of the University of Hawaii’s, Center for Smart Building and Community Design at the UH Sea Grant College Program in the School of Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). He received his Doctor of Architecture degree from the University of Hawaii.

Stephen Meder serves on the Hawaii Energy Policy Forum, the University of Hawaii at Manoa,  Chancellor’s Commission on Climate Change, and the UHM Sustainability Council.  He assists the UHM administration on issues of sustainable building design and setting university energy goals.
His research, teaching and publications are focused in the areas of solar design and sustainable building design practices. In 2001 he received a US Department of Energy Design Award for a building-integrated photovoltaic design on Ford Island and he recently received a national American Institute of Architects Eco-Literacy Award for combining his classroom teaching with community outreach.
