Douglas M. Muchoney, Ph.D.
Dr. Douglas M. Muchoney is the Group on Earth Observations (GEO)
Senior Scientific Expert for Biodiversity and Ecosystems. He holds a
Ph.D. in Geography from Boston University, an M.S. in Geographic and
Cartographic Sciences from George Mason University, and a B.S. in
Forestry from Virginia Tech. Dr. Muchoney previously led the
Geographic Analysis and Monitoring Program of the U.S. Geological
Survey. He has held several positions with conservation organizations
as Ecologist and Remote Sensing Specialist using satellite image, aerial
and field data to map and monitor ecosystems and protected areas. He
pioneered the rapid ecological assessment (REA) techniques to support
conservation assessments. Dr. Muchoney is currently working with a
wide-range of institutions to launch the GEO Biodiversity Observation
Network (GEO BON), a bold new initiative to monitor the world’s
biodiversity and to understand its relationship to human health, food
security, disasters, water, climate and energy.
