Charmaine Tavares
The Honorable Mayor of Maui County, Charmaine Tavares, has been involved in public service for 38 years. She was a public school teacher, counselor and high school athletic director for 16 years, and the program director for Maui Community College’s Upward Bound program for six years. She served as the Director of Maui County’s Department of Parks and Recreation for six years, before being elected in 1996 to represent the Upcountry area on the Maui County Council. She was re-elected five times, and after reaching the term limit of ten years in 2006, Ms. Tavares was elected Mayor of the County of Maui.
Mayor Tavares has a 5th year professional diploma from the University of Hawai`i-Manoa, where she also received a Bachelor’s in Education degree.
